Leaving On a Jet Plane

I am so in need of a holiday. Work’s been so busy that in the mornings, I sit down and the next time when I look up from the pc, it’s lunch. Afternoons are such a spin because I have to battle the after-lunch Z-monster.

I need a long get-away - preferable very long. To be able to explore lands that I’ve never been to, that I’ve only ever read in books. To a strange, unfamiliar country where the very air I breath smells different.

I want to go to the very spot where history was written. I want to experience the thrill and rush of getting lost in a bustling city centre, and just letting the crowds guide my path. I want the excitement of being able to communicate with nothing but awkward sign language and a few badly pronounced phrases. I want to soak up the culture and energy of the life there and see things through their perspective.

In short, I want to get out of the daily mundane routine I have. The travel bug in me is just growing bigger and bigger. And I don’t know how much longer I can contain it.

Actually, it’s not that I’m unable to go away for a while. There are just 2 little problems.

One: I really hate to travel alone. And two: I’m saving for a new dSLR.

I’ve been really blessed that I’ve always had excellent travel companions on all my holidays. Experiences become so much more vivid and enjoyable when you have friends with you. I was traveling alone in Paris one time, and while I had fun, it simply just wasn’t the same.

Another stumbling block is my budget. I’m not a rich guy, nor does my job pay that well. So I have to pick my indulges very carefully. At the moment, I’m itching to get a digital SLR.

I’ve always had an interest in photography since schooldays, but I never really took it up seriously simply because back then, photography was an expensive hobby for a student. All I had was my little 35mm autofocus camera with 70mm zoom. But things are so different now. With digital cameras, the only costs you really incur are the costs of your equipment. And the best part about digital, it’s instant.

Anyway, I digress.

In any case, unless I solve problem one first, ie: Find a suitable travel companion(s), I wouldn’t even really need to think about problem two.

Sigh…
