Sunrise

Out in the field, I get to watch a spectacular sunrise every day. Sunrise starts at about 6am. It’s really wonderful just to watch this massive red orb slowly rising above the horizon.

And the sky’s color just keeps changing by the minute – from the minuet tones of red that start to peep out to the wonderful shades of night that reluctantly yield away.

And yet again this brings to mind yet another memory. Yeah I know. How come I seem to be talking so much about my memories rather than what’s happening now in India?

I don’t quite know too. Perhaps it is because I can’t really talk about what I am doing exactly, although I think it more likely that out here, I have these little chunks of time when I’m alone and not doing anything.

And so, sunrises are one such time.

I found it exceeding easy to talk to her. I guess most people won’t call her drop-dead beautiful but neither would they say that she’s an ugly duckling. Cute doesn’t quite do it as well. The term came to mind during one of the past mornings – A quiet beauty.

We had gone away for a short weekend break with a group of friends. And in the evening, we started to talk about what we were going to be doing the next day. And I said I think I would wake up early to watch the sunrise. She thought it was a pretty good idea and said that she would join me. Back then, I didn’t think she would seriously come out to the living room to join me. After all, sunrise was at about 5plus where we were if memory serves.

Anyway, I woke up and went to the balcony to wait. Not long after, the balcony doors opened and out she comes. I can’t remember what we chatted about then but I remembered that the sky was pretty overcast. And it seemed that there wouldn’t be a sunrise that morning.

We waited a while and then decided to go into the living room and re-position the sofa such that it was facing out of the balcony. This way, we could be comfortably seated and keep warm (it was wintertime).

We tucked ourselves under a blanket and chatted on the sofa until we just settled into an easy silence. We had been up late the night before and so were still quite sleepy at 6am in the morning.

She fell asleep on the sofa with her head on one of the pillows. And when I looked over at her, I felt this warm, protective feeling coming over me. She had this most peaceful look and had a very very slight smile.

And I fell in love that early winter morning.

Oh, and we never got to see the sunrise that morning.

PS: This post was written on a miserable piece of paper while out in the field, typed out and posted in a hurry. Cos I’m sweaty, hot and in terrible need of a long shower and long visit to the loo.

Update: Uploaded sunrise pic on 29 Oct 06

That's a very lovely, romantic memory. Store it up in a happy place. Don't brood over it k?

Reservist is ok. It's the sweating and the inevitable rashes that I can't stand. :)
